Malaysia Super League (Malay: Liga Super Malaysia)

The Malaysia Super League (MSL) is the country’s top-tier professional football league. The league was formed in 2004, along with the Malaysia Premier League, after the Football Association of Malaysia decided to privatise the Malaysian football league.

The MSL is contested by 12 local clubs. The clubs in the MSL play a 2-round league format, resulting in each teams playing 22 games per season. The MSL operates on a relegation and promotion system. The 2 clubs with the lowest standings at the end of the season will be relegated to the Malaysia Premier League in the following season.

The league typically starts in January or February, and ends in the months of August or October, usually with a one-month Ramadan break in the middle of the season. League games usually kick off in the night time, though some matches may take place in the afternoon.

Malaysia FAM League

Malaysia Division 4 League

The Malaysia Division 4 League (M4) is the country’s fourth-tier football league. The first season of the league will take place in 2019. The league will be contested by football clubs from 14 amateur leagues across the country – 10 of which are run by private companies and 4 which are run by state football associations. The winners of these 14 leagues will be promoted to the M4.

The league will be formed with the intent to create a pathway for amateur clubs and players in Malaysia to climb the ranks of the Malaysian football system. With the formation of the M4, amateur clubs could theoretically work its way up to the Malaysia Super League, the country’s top-tier professional football league.
